MORGAN RHYS (1716-79) is one of Wales's principal hymnwriters, to be ranked alongside William Williams of Pantycelyn and Ann Griffiths. Born in the area of Cil-y-cwm and later associated with the parish of Llanfynydd in Carmarthenshire, he was much influenced by the Methodist movement, and made his mark both as a teacher in the circulating schools and as a hymnwriter. Several small collections of his hymns, characterised by great spiritual intensity, were published between 1755 and 1775.
